Ladislav Ščurko (born April 4, 1986 in Gelnica , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player , who during his active career played for HC Košice in the Slovakian extra league and became Slovak champion with them in 2009 . Since July 2012, Ščurko has been serving an eight-year prison sentence for the murder of an ice hockey referee . During the lengthy process, he had already spent over two and a half years in prison between April 2009 and December 2011.

Career

Ladislav Ščurko started his career at HK Spišská Nová Ves . Here he went through various junior teams and played in the 2003/04 season in the U20 extra league and in the second-rate first division . In the 2004 NHL Entry Draft , the Philadelphia Flyers secured the rights to the center in the sixth round in 170th place. Then Ščurko moved to the Seattle Thunderbirds in the Western Hockey League . With 42 points scored, he was the fifth-best rookie scorer and set a club record when he was able to score at least one point in nine games in a row. The left-handed shooter stayed in North America for three years and went back to Slovakia in 2007 . He signed a contract with HC Košice , with which he became runner-up. In the 2008/09 season he celebrated the championship with his team.

Murder charges, acquittals and convictions

In the spring of 2009, Ščurko was taken away from the HC Košice championship celebration and charged with the murder of a referee who had temporarily lived with him. In a lengthy process, he was temporarily acquitted. After two and a half years in prison, he started his comeback in December 2011 for third division club HK Slovan Gelnica and second division club HK VTJ Trebišov . After another trial, Ladislav Ščurko was sentenced to eight years in prison in July 2012. The judge remained well below the demands of the public prosecutor's office, which requested 15 years in prison.
