Jan Čaloun (born December 20, 1972 in Ústí nad Labem , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for the San Jose Sharks and Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League from 1990 to 2010 .

Career

Čaloun first played in the junior teams of HC Chemopetrol Litvínov . There he made for the 1990/91 season promotion to the senior team that played in the extra league. After four years in the top Czech league, the winger made the leap to North America, where he signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks , who had selected him in the fourth round of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft in 75th place.

The Sharks first used the Czechs for the entire 1994/95 season in the International Hockey League with their farm team , the Kansas City Blades , which was also due to the lockout- related shortening of the NHL season . In the 1995/96 season , Čaloun played eleven games for San Jose in the National Hockey League . There he scored eleven points, including eight goals. In addition, his first four shots on goal of his NHL career were also goals, which he set an NHL record. Nevertheless, he did not manage to get a regular place in the squad, and so he moved after two more games in the NHL season 1996/97 for the season 1997/98 in the Finnish SM-liiga to HIFK Helsinki . He stayed there for four years and won a championship title, as well as the MVP trophy of the SM-liiga .

After the San Jose Sharks had surrendered his rights to the Columbus Blue Jackets , he returned to North America in 2000 , where he terminated his contract after a short time and returned to Helsinki for the rest of the season . For the 2001/02 season he moved within the league for three years to the Espoo Blues . At the beginning of the 2004/05 season, Čaloun signed with his home club in Litvínov, but went to the Russian Super League during the game year and ran there for Sibir Novosibirsk and Severstal Tscherepowez . From the 2005/06 season he played again in the Czech Republic for HC Moeller Pardubice . In the summer of 2007 he moved to the newly promoted HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi , with whom he stayed for a year even after the direct relegation. As a loan player, he also came to two appearances in the extra league for an ex-club HC Litvínov in the 2008/09 season . He last played in the 2009/10 season for the second division HC Vrchlabí . Then he ended his career.

International

Čaloun represented the Czech national team for the first time at the Junior World Cup in 1992 , where he finished fifth with the team. In the following years he played for the senior team at the World Championships in 1993 and 1999 . There he won a bronze and a gold medal. He also played at the 1998 Olympic ice hockey tournament in Nagano , where the Czechs sensationally won gold after beating Russia in the final.
