DFB Cup 1997/98

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1998 DFB Cup winner was FC Bayern Munich . In the final at the Olympiastadion Berlin on May 16, 1998, Bayern Munich won an even game 2-1 against the underdog MSV Duisburg , who initially took the lead through Bachirou Salou . After Markus Babbel was able to equalize, Mario Basler scored the winninggoal for Bayern with a free kick in the 89th minute. Bayern had eliminated defending champion VfB Stuttgart in the semifinals.

The amateur league team Eintracht Trier defeated the reigning UEFA Cup winner FC Schalke 04 and the reigning UEFA Champions League winner Borussia Dortmund one after the other and made it to the semi-finals.

Since Bayern were runner-up in the Champions League , in which they reached the final against Manchester United , MSV Duisburg took part in the last edition of the European Cup Winners' Cup, but failed in the first round against Belgian Cup winner KRC Genk . For Duisburg it was the last appearance in a European competition to date.

There was already a curiosity in the first round of the competition when the amateurs of 1. FC Kaiserslautern had to compete against their own professionals.
