Uwe Spies (born July 8, 1967 in Riedlingen ) is a former German football player .

Career

Spies began his career in 1985 with SSV Ulm 1846 . As an 18-year-old he scored 17 goals in the upper league in 1985/86 and was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Ulm. In 1988 he was relegated to the Baden-Württemberg league. In 1990 he moved to the then second division club SC Freiburg . With eleven goals, the striker was involved in the rise of Freiburg in 1993 and also became a top performer in the Bundesliga. In the 1994/95 season Spies was used in all 34 games of the season, scored 13 goals and thus had a share in qualifying for the UEFA Cup .

After Freiburg was relegated in 1997, Spies left the club after 80 first division games (20 goals) and moved to MSV Duisburg . At MSV he played another 86 first division games and scored 14 times. He reached the final in the 1997/98 DFB Cup , which his team lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich . In 2000 he ended his career.

From 2004 to 2006 Spies was sports director at VfR Aalen .
