The Dindéfelo highlands are located in southeast Senegal in the Kédougou region . Here are residential areas of the Fulbe ethnic group , also known as Fula or Peul (h) . Because of the cultural uniqueness of this ethnic group, whose distribution extends from the Fouta Djallon mountain country in the south to this point, part of the highlands with the Dindefelo Falls in the center became part of the Bassari country , cultural landscapes of the Bassari, Fula and Bedik with a core area of 79.24 km² has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2012 .

The Dindéfelo highlands north forms the border of Senegal with Guinea and west of the Gambia River a plateau long with an approximately 16 kilometers southwest-northeast oriented and shaped valleys cut steep drop to the north and with a gentle slope to the south. The Highlands is a Northern pillar of the rainy and up to 1537  m upstanding fouta Djallon -Berglands in which the rivers Senegal , Gambia and Niger spring.

The south-western part of the steep drop has a number of the second highest elevations in Senegal , spread over almost three kilometers, each around 505  m .

Since the highlands themselves are not named in official maps, a name can only be derived from the village closest to the summit, which is called Dindéfelo . It is located 1500 meters northeast of the summit at about 200  m altitude at the exit of a Kerbtal valley, in which Senegal's highest waterfalls, the Dindefelo Falls , can be found.
