The Bassari Mountains are a north-western threshold of the Fouta Djallon Mountains , which can be traced topographically from Guinea to the Kédougou region in southeast Senegal around 120 kilometers to the Assirik in the Niokolo-Koba National Park .
It is named after the residential areas of the Bassari ethnic group south of Salémata , where around the main town of the rural community Ethiolo the ridge has the highest elevations north of the border and where the Bassari have retained their cultural uniqueness and originality in the remote and inaccessible villages. This part of the Bassari Mountains has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage since 2012 as part of the Bassari country , cultural landscapes of the Bassari, Fula and Bedik with a core area of 242.38 km² . Other parts of the mountains between Salémata and the Gambia River with an area of 1634.42 km² have been listed as buffer zones.
Since the mountain area itself is not named in official maps, a name can only be derived from the fact that the Bassari gave the whole landscape its name.
