The Mont Assirik lies in the Bassari mountains in the southeast of the West African State of Senegal . It is the highest point in the Niokolo-Koba National Park and it is centrally located in the southeastern part of the park, which belongs to the Kédougou region, about halfway between the Gambia in the south and the national road N7 in the north.
Although the height of the mountain is traditionally given as 311 m , according to the Opentopomap the entire 33 hectare, unforested summit plateau is circumscribed by a 320 m contour line, and the coordinates given in this article are linked to a height of 327 m .
The slopes of the elongated and irregularly delimited summit plateau, which are relatively steep on all sides by around 100 meters in altitude, are wooded. A major reintroduction project for chimpanzees , the "Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project", took place here in the 1970s . They live here under conditions that are rather unusual for their needs.
