The Niokolo Koba is a river in the West African state of Senegal . The Niokolo-Koba National Park , through the middle of which it flows, is named after him.
geography
The Niokolo Koba is located in the southeast of Senegal, its middle and lower reaches form the border between the Tambacounda region in the north and the Kédougou region in the south. In the dry season it only has running water in places. Its valley floor is almost entirely covered with forest.
The Niokolo Koba rises in the north of the Kédougou region in the mountainous region around the Sambaya ( 395 m ), the highest point within a radius of about 45 kilometers. The source river with the longest valley path and with the strongest and widest flow tracks that can be seen from the satellite perspective rises four kilometers southeast of the Sambaya and three and a half kilometers northeast of the village of Bambaraya . The headwaters are located in a wooded valley head about 250 m high. The source river initially follows a general south-southwest direction for 23 kilometers and then receives an approximately 21 kilometers long tributary coming from the left and east-southeast, which could also be used as a source river.
From then on, the Niokolo Koba valley path goes west and reaches the eastern border of the national park at kilometer 58. From kilometer 89 on, Niokolo Koba is the border between the regions of Kédougou and Tambacounda, meandering in parts. The bridge of the N 7 is reached at km 141. Finally, coming from the right and east, it joins the middle reaches of the Gambia and has covered 247 kilometers by then. At the mouth, the river bed is a good 10 meters wide, while the Gambia flows here to about 90 meters wide.
traffic
The national road N 7 passes through on the way from Tambacounda in the northwest to Kédougou in the southeast of the Trockental the central Niokolo Koba with a 70 meters spanning bridge. Two kilometers south of this bridge is the Niokolo-Koba airfield , one of the smallest unpaved airfields in Senegal.
