Marsassoum is a small town in southern Senegal . It is located in the department of Sédhiou the Sédhiou region .

Geographical location

Marsassoum is located in the center of the Casamance at a height of m on the left bank of the Soungrougrou , a right northern tributary of the Casamance River . To the west it is 33 km to Bignona , to the southwest 63 km to Ziguinchor and to the east 53 km to Sédhiou .

history

The village of Marsassoum achieved commune (city) status in 1990 . Marsassoum was part of the Kolda region until 2008 and has since been part of the newly founded Sédhiou region .

According to the 2002 census, the 6410 inhabitants were distributed among 685 households. 90 percent of the population are Mandinka .

religion

There is a church and a small Catholic mission in the parish. 95 percent of the population are Muslims .

politics

The mayor is Alassane Ndiaye. He was elected in 2009 and his term ends in 2014.

traffic

Due to its isolated location between the lower reaches of the Casamance River and Soungrougrou, Marsassoum is not served by the highway network in Senegal . The only connection to the east to the Sédhiou departmental prefecture is the 54-kilometer-long, partially paved R 21 . In Marsassoum the first R21 ends on Soungrougrou who passed along with its amphibious and mangrove shore zone of the drive to the west to as Transgambienne known N4 and after Bignona and Ziguinchor opposes a 3500-meter-wide barrier. In order to make the passage possible, a road embankment was raised on the west bank as part of the R21, which runs 2000 meters through the mangrove area and extends 1000 meters into the river bed. A car ferry is available to cross the remaining 460 meter opening in the river.

The nearest airport is Ziguinchor Airport , from which Air Sénégal offers flights to Dakar . The nearest international airport is Banjul International Airport in Gambia .

economy

The people live mainly from agriculture, fishing and small businesses.

education

Marsassoum has three elementary schools, a middle school and a lycée . The Lycée opened its doors in 2007.
