Dahra , also known as Dahra Djoloff , is the largest city in the Linguère department of the Louga region , with over 30,000 inhabitants , in the central north of Senegal .

Geographical location

Dahra is located 224 kilometers northeast of Dakar in the center of the Louga region . It is 85 kilometers to the regional prefecture of Louga and 52 kilometers to Linguère . The city lies in the rain-poor and sparsely populated Ferlo . The landscape is shaped by the climatic conditions of the Sahel zone.

history

Dahra was a station on a branch of the Dakar – Saint-Louis line to Linguère that began in Louga . This branch line was built between 1907 and 1923, but has since been shut down and partially dismantled. In 1990 Dahra achieved the status of a commune (city).

Dahra is on the N 3 national road . This connects the cities of Thiès , Khombole , Bambey , Diourbel , Mbacké and Touba in the southwest with Linguère , Ranérou , Ourossogui and Matam in the east of the country and with the border with Mauritania on the shores of Senegal .

Economy and Infrastructure

The two main industries for Dahra are livestock and trade. The city is home to the largest weekly cattle market in all of Senegal. Due to its central importance as a business location in northern Senegal, the city received a House of Justice in 2016 in order to be able to resolve legal disputes on the spot in court.
