Thionck-Essyl is a small town in southwest Senegal . It is located in the Bignona department of the Ziguinchor region .
Geographical location
Thionck-Essyl is located in the west of the Casamance in an area which, together with a number of villages, is surrounded on three sides by a kilometer-wide mangrove system full of strongly meandering and often branched watercourses, exposed to the tidal currents . In the south the confluence of the Casamance River is 14 kilometers away, in the west the amphibious wetlands of the Marigot de Diouloulou reach close to the outskirts, and 10 kilometers further to the north the bank zone of the Marigot de Baila begins as its left eastern branch . Access to this area from the east is also restricted by the unpopulated and impassable Forêt Classée de Tendouck .
The city is located 30 kilometers west of the departmental prefecture of Bignona and 35 kilometers northwest of the regional prefecture of Ziguinchor .

Thionck-Essyl is not served by the trunk road network in Senegal . The only connection to the N 5 and to Bignona is a 44-kilometer-long, partially paved cul-de-sac , which makes a detour to the southeast via Tendouck and Elana because of the Forêt de Tendouck . and accompanied the north bank of the Marigot de Bignona .
