Koungheul is a city in the center of Senegal . It is prefecture of the Koungheul department in the Kaffrine region .
Geographical location
Koungheul is located in the southeast of the Kaffrine region , 81 kilometers from the Kaffrine regional prefecture , on the left southern side of the Nianija Bolong , whose dry valley, which is perhaps 40 meters wide, only carries water here in the rainy season .

traffic
The national road N 1 leads through Koungheul . It connects the port metropolis of Dakar and the cities of Mbour , Fatick , Kaolack , Birkelane , Kaffrine and Malem Hodar in the west with Koumpentoum and Tambacounda in the east and continues at Kidira across the Malian border to Kayes . The Dakar – Niger railway runs parallel to the N1 on the northern outskirts and is important for freight traffic in the peanut basin and with neighboring Mali. Both traffic axes cross the dry valley of the Nianija Bolong west of the city .
