Koumpentoum is a city in the center of Senegal . It is prefecture of the Koumpentoum department in the Tambacounda region .

Geographical location

Koumpentoum is located on the western border of the Tambacounda region , 99 kilometers from the regional prefecture of Tambacounda , on the left southern side of the Nianija Bolong , whose dry valley, which is perhaps 40 meters wide, only carries water here in the rainy season.

history

The Village Koumpentoum was the seat of a communauté rurale and an arrondissement. When the latter was raised to the rank of a department, Koumpentoum received the legal status of a commune (city) in 2008 . The urban area is measured from the sub-prefecture

  • 2 km north to the Vallée de Koumpentoum
  • 2 km east up to the valley towards the village of Koumpentoum Socé

The national road N 1 leads through Koumpentoum . It connects the port metropolis of Dakar and the cities of Mbour , Fatick , Kaolack , Birkelane , Kaffrine , Malem Hodar and Koungheul in the west with Tambacounda in the east and continues at Kidira across the Malian border to Kayes . The N1 runs side by side with the Dakar – Niger railway , which is important for freight traffic in the peanut basin and with neighboring Mali.
