Birkelane is a city in the center of Senegal . It is prefecture of the Birkelane department in the Kaffrine region . The spelling of the name is not entirely uniform in official use, but the website of the Conseil départemental produced on site will use the authoritative spelling.

Geographical location

Birkelane is located in the west of the Kaffrine region , 21 kilometers from the Kaffrine regional prefecture , on the right northern bank of the Saloum , which from here carries water all year round and meanders west on its way to the Atlantic Ocean, 110 kilometers away .

history

The place Birkelane received a train station during the expansion of the Dakar – Niger railway between Thiès and Kayes , which took place between 1907 and 1923.

From 1976 Birkelane was the seat of a communauté rurale and an arrondissement. When the latter was raised to the rank of a department, Birkelane received the legal status of a commune (city) in 2008 . The urban area is measured from the sub-prefecture

The national road N 1 runs through Birkelane . It connects Birkelane with the port metropolis of Dakar and the cities of Mbour , Fatick , Kaolack and Kahone in the west and with Kaffrine , Malem Hodar , Koungheul , Koumpentoum and Tambacounda in the east and continues at Kidira across the Malian border to Kayes . The Dakar – Niger railway , which is important for freight traffic in the peanut basin and with neighboring Mali , runs right through Birkelane and parallel to the N1 .

Birkelane is connected to the national air transport network via the Kaolack airfield, 33 km away between Kaolack and Kahone .
