Goudomp is a city in southern Senegal . It is the capital of the Goudomp department in the Sédhiou region .

Geographical location

Goudomp is located in the west of Casamance , the part of Senegal that stretches between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau . The city is located 295 kilometers southeast of Dakar and 39 kilometers west of the regional prefecture of Sédhiou . The city is located on the left southern bank of the Casamance River , which is about 4.5 km wide here under the wash-out influence of the tidal currents including the amphibious bank zone on the north bank. The open sea is still about 100 river kilometers away and in the south the border with Guinea-Bissau comes within 12 kilometers of the outskirts.

history

The village of Goudomp was founded between 1835 and 1840. The population growth of the village was based on several waves of immigration from different ethnic groups. The Mandinka make up the largest share with 45%. In 1990 Goudomp obtained the status of a commune (city). In the period that followed, the Casamance conflict caused significant immigration from the rural area to the city. In 2008 Goudomp became the seat of a department.

Through the city leading national road N6 , on the south bank of the Casamance River regions of Casamance with each other and Tambacounda connects with the rest of the country. It is particularly important for Goudomp that this road offers a fast connection to the city of Ziguinchor , which is 41 kilometers further to the west , as the regional prefecture of Sédhiou is on the other bank of the river and can only be reached by pirogue for the people of Goudomp , so this is only accessible for the necessary contact them for official matters. Because of all other needs, they tend to go to the capital of the neighboring region. There is also a connection to the national air transport network with Ziguinchor Airport .
