The Soungrougrou is a river in the African state of Senegal .

geography

The Soungrougrou is the most important tributary of the Casamance in the southern Senegalese area between the states of Gambia and Guinea-Bissau , which is traditionally referred to as the Casamance . The headwaters of the river can be found north of Kolda and begins as an intermittent body of water whose bed only fills with water during the rainy season . It flows in a general westward direction with a valley path of 170 kilometers towards the Casamance. Just before Marsassoum , the river turns south and maintains this direction for the last 25 kilometers to the mouth, which is 27 kilometers east of Ziguinchor , the largest city in Casamance.

In the lower reaches, from Kandiadiou and Diaroume to the mouth, the tidal current and the mixing of salt and fresh water are noticeable over a length of 80 kilometers . Here the river bed has been washed out to a width of 500 to 1000 meters. The shore zone is accompanied by a mangrove system , which in front of the mouth has a width of 4000 meters throughout.

traffic

In the area of the tidal current, the Soungrougrou can be navigated by ships and boats. There are no bridges in this section of the river. The river can only be crossed by ferry. The most important of them connects Marsassoum on the east bank with Bignona in the west. The river here is 460 meters wide, with the road on the west bank still one and a half kilometers through amphibious mangrove area. Bridges of supraregional importance can only be built at Kandiadiou and Diaroume in the Sédhiou region , where a 900-meter-long dam connects Sédhiou in the south with the capital Dakar via the most important transit route through the Gambia .
