Kolda [ kɔlˈda ] is a city in the south of Senegal . It is the capital of the Kolda region and the Kolda department .
Geographical location
Kolda is located in the center of Casamance , the part of Senegal that stretches between Gambia and Guinea-Bissau and at the same time on the western edge of the Kolda region. The city center is on the right north bank of the Casamance River , which has a bed about 75 to 100 meters wide here. A bridge connects the city center to the districts on the south bank. Upstream of the city the river is so shallow that a ford allows it to be crossed.
history
Kolda achieved the status of a town (commune mixte) in 1952. In 1960 the status was upgraded to a commune de plein exercice . Since 1984, Kolda has been the capital of the Kolda region, which was then created by dividing the Casamance region.
Kolda is the seat of the diocese of Kolda, created in 1999 .

The N 6 national road runs through the districts on the south bank and connects the Casamance regions with one another and with the rest of the country via Tambacounda . Three kilometers from the city center of Kolda is the Kolda airfield to the west of the city .
