Kartong (spelling variant: Kartung ) is a town in the West African state of Gambia .

According to a calculation for 2013, around 5651 inhabitants live there, the result of the last published census from 1993 was 2536.

geography

Kartong, one of the oldest towns, is the southernmost town in Gambia and is located in the West Coast region , Kombo South district . The place is about 9.5 kilometers south of Gunjur . The Allahein River , with its mangroves on its banks, is around four kilometers away.

Culture and sights

In Kartong a sacred (crocodile) pond and old well are known as a place of worship under the name Folonko (" Sacred Crocodile Pool of Folonko "). It is one of three sacred crocodile pools in Gambia, but the place of worship in Kartong is the most remote and therefore the least visited by tourists.
