Tanner Richard (born April 6, 1993 in Markham , Ontario ) is a Swiss ice hockey player of Canadian origin who has been under contract with Genève-Servette HC since the 2017/18 season . His father Mike was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Richard was in Canadian Markham in the province of Ontario born. But since his father played ice hockey in Switzerland, his son spent his childhood there and learned to play ice hockey in the offspring of SC Rapperswil . He played there until the 2010/11 season after going through all of the offspring. He made his debut for Rapperswil in the season progresses National League A . He was also active on loan for EHC Wetzikon in the third-class first division , which was trained by his father. Richard then moved to North America, where he was active in the Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm in the following two years until 2013 . During this time he was selected in the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in 71st place by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League .
The Lightning signed the attacker in April 2013 and used him in their farm team Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . There he was exclusively active in the following seasons. He made his NHL debut for Tampa during the 2016-17 season .
For the 2017/18 season Richard moved back to Switzerland. He signed a two-year contract with Genève-Servette HC with a release clause for the NHL.
International
While Richard's father was active on the international stage for his native Canada, Richard played in the junior division for the Swiss junior national teams. There he went through the teams from the U17 to the U20 team. Between 2011 and 2013 he played for Switzerland at the U18 Junior World Championships in 2011 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2012 and 2013 . Richard made his debut for the Swiss national team on April 28, 2017 in a 2-0 win over Denmark .
