Michael "Mike" Richard (born July 9, 1966 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach , who played in North America and Switzerland between 1983 and 2008 in particular . His son Tanner is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career as a player
Mike Richard was signed by the Washington Capitals in 1987 , but until 1990 he played mainly in the American Hockey League (AHL). For the Capitals, he completed seven games.
In 1990 Richard moved to Switzerland for Zürcher SC . Apart from the 1991/1992 season with the Milano Devils , with whom he won the Alpine League , he played for 15 years until the end of his active career in the two top Swiss professional leagues NLA and NLB , including for the Zurich SC, the GCK Lions , the ZSC Lions, the SC Rapperswil-Jona and the EHC Olten .
International
Internationally, he played nine games for Team Canada , five of them at the 1995 Spengler Cup , which Team Canada won. Richard contributed a total of two goals and four assists to the success, making him, together with Gilles Thibeaudeau, the best scorer of his team.
In February 2007 he had to end his career due to a shoulder injury.
Career as a coach
After his career as a player, Richard stayed on as a coach in Swiss ice hockey, including as head coach for various teams in what was then the highest amateur league at the time, as well as in the junior division of various clubs in Eastern Switzerland .
Richard has been the trainer of the U17 novice team at EHC Bülach since 2018 .
