Robert Mayer (born October 9, 1989 in Havířov , Czechoslovakia ) is a Swiss - Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with HC Davos in the National League since the 2020/21 season .

Career

Robert Mayer was born in Havířov , but grew up in Haldenstein . As a child and teenager he played for the EHC Chur . In the mini-A age (13 to 14 years) other players were preferred to him and he often had to play in a lower class, so he decided to switch to EHC Kloten . During this time he lived with relatives of his stepfather in Winterthur . Until the end of the 2006/07 season he played for the U20 juniors of the EHC Kloten, and during this time he made his debut for the then Kloten Flyers in the National League A.

In the 2007 CHL Import Draft , Mayer was selected by the Saint John Sea Dogs from the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec in third overall position. He then decided to move to North America and completed 32 games for the Canadians in his rookie season , achieving 16 wins with an average of 3.77. In the playoffs, in which his team could advance to the semi-finals, he was used in two games. After the season, Mayer, undrafted , was invited to the training camp of the Canadiens de Montréal and signed a three-year entry contract with the Canadiens on September 24, 2008 .

In the following season he played again for the Sea Dogs. He managed to almost double his playing time and he completed 57 games. With 26 wins he recorded an average of 3.21 against goals. However, he was eliminated with the Sea Dogs in the playoffs in four games against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles . He was then appointed to the squad of the Hamilton Bulldogs , the Canadiens' farm team, for the 2009/10 AHL season . But he only played one game with the Bulldogs, while he spent most of the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL and came there to 31 missions. His greatest success until then was in the playoffs when he won the ECHL championship, the Kelly Cup , with the Cyclones . Because of his performance in the playoffs, he was voted Kelly Cup Playoffs Most Valuable Player .

In the next season he was able to establish himself in the squad of the Hamilton Bulldogs and completed 21 games as an AHL rookie. In the 2011/12 season he was on the ice in 39 games and set a new personal record with a catch rate of 90.9%. However, the Bulldogs missed the playoffs again. For the game against Tampa Bay Lightning on April 4, 2012, Mayer was appointed for the first time as Peter Budaj's backup goalkeeper in the Canadiens line-up.

At the end of May 2014, Mayer was put on the Canadiens' waiver list, from which no other team signed him. This allowed the Canadiens to dissolve his treaty. Then Mayer was signed on June 6, 2014 by Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League A for three years. In the following six years he was Servette mostly goalkeeper and showed excellent performance, so that he was regularly invited to the Swiss national team. In the summer of 2018, he had an accident with a quad bike in Canada in which he broke six ribs and two vertebrae. He was out for two and a half months and therefore had a difficult time with coach Chris McSorley in the 2018/19 season . During the 2019/20 season he received a four-year offer from HC Davos , which he accepted.

International

At the international level, Mayer competes for Switzerland . He played for the national team for the first time at the U18 World Cup in 2007 and led Switzerland to the quarter-finals with a catch rate of 92.41%. The catch quota was also the best of the tournament. At the U20 World Cup in 2008 , he was again on the ice for Switzerland, but could not prevent the team's relegation from the top division.

During his last North American season Mayer debuted for the men's national team and then took the national team at the World Cup in 2014 in part (without insert). He made his world championship debut with the men two years later as part of the world championship when he was used in two games. He played another World Cup game in the 2019 World Championship .
