Aaron Palushaj (born September 7, 1989 in Livonia , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player in the position of winger who has been under contract with HC Davos from the National League since May 2019 .
Career
Palushaj began his career with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the United States Hockey League , with whom he won the 2006 Clark Cup . In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round at a total of 44th position by the St. Louis Blues . From 2007 to 2009 he attended the University of Michigan and was meanwhile active for their ice hockey team, the Michigan Wolverines, in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). During this time he won the Mason Cup , the championship of the CCHA, with the Wolverines in 2008 . In the following year, the offensive player scored 50 points in 39 CCHA games , which meant he was appointed to the CCHA First All-Star Team and the West All-American Team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association at the end of the season .
He then completed 52 games for the Peoria Rivermen , the farm team of the St. Louis Blues, in the American Hockey League (AHL), before he was given up on March 3, 2010 by the Blues to the Montréal Canadiens . St. Louis received the defender Matt D'Agostini in return . In the following three years Palushaj played 41 games for the Canadiens in the National Hockey League (NHL); most of the time he was active for Montreal's AHL farm team Hamilton Bulldogs .
On February 5, 2013, Aaron Palushaj was signed by the Colorado Avalanche as a waiver . In July 2013, he signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes . This year he spent, apart from two NHL missions, exclusively with the Hurricanes farm team, the Charlotte Checkers from the AHL.
As a result, the Hurricanes gave Palushaj in September 2014 to the KHL Medveščak Zagreb , from which he moved within the Continental Hockey League to Awtomobilist Yekaterinburg just two months later . There he ended the 2014/15 season and then moved back to North America, to the Philadelphia Flyers . However, they only used him with their AHL farm team, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms , and did not extend his expiring contract, so that in September 2016 he signed a new one-year contract with the Cleveland Monsters , which was exclusively limited to the AHL . Shortly before the start of the Spengler Cup , he left the monsters and was signed by the Belarusian club HK Dinamo Minsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) . There he came to 20 KHL games by the end of the season before he moved to Sweden to Brynäs IF . He only stayed there for one season before moving to Örebro HK for the 2018/19 season, where he served as assistant captain. For the 2019/20 season he finally signed a one-year contract with HC Davos from the National League .
International
Aaron Palushaj represented his home country with the US national team for the first time at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2009 , in which Team USA finished fifth. He made his second appearance four years later at the 2013 Men's World Cup . In this tournament, the Americans won the bronze medal after beating the Finnish selection in the game for third place . Palushaj scored in nine starts a goal and an assist of .
