Tournament overview
Men's
The 78th men's ice hockey world championship was held in 2014 in the Belarusian capital Minsk .
The application prevailed at the annual congress of the World Ice Hockey Federation IIHF on May 8, 2009 in Bern with 75 votes against those from Hungary (24 votes), Latvia (3) and Ukraine (3). Originally, five member countries applied to host the event.
Belarus had already applied to host the 2013 World Cup without success . The country hosted a world championship for the first time in 2014, the games took place in two arenas in the capital Minsk. The main venue was the Minsk Arena with 15,000 seats, which was opened in December 2009. The second arena was the Tschyschouka-Arena , construction of which began in June 2009 and offers space for 8,000 spectators.
The award of the World Cup to Belarus was at times controversial, especially after many Belarusian opposition members were arrested in December 2010. Among other things, several members of the European Parliament turned to the IIHF and asked the association to withdraw the award of the World Cup as long as there are political prisoners in Belarus. After the execution of two convicted of the terrorist attack on the Minsk metro in March 2012, the debate about a possible postponement of the World Cup flared up again. Several German politicians, including the chairwoman of the sports committee in the Bundestag, Dagmar Freitag , declared in April 2012 their support for the project to host the World Cup in another country. In contrast, the World Ice Hockey Federation IIHF said that the decision to hold the World Cup in Belarus would remain. Since there was no discussion and no vote at the IIHF association congress in Helsinki in May 2012, the World Cup took place in Belarus as planned.
