The 17th ice hockey world championship and 28th ice hockey European championship took place from March 13 to 22, 1950 in London , Great Britain . Nine teams participated. The mode of competition was the same as last year. First a preliminary round with three groups was played; the respective group first and second played the world champion in a final round, the third placed played for places 7–9. Canada won its 13th world title at this World Cup, Switzerland celebrated its fourth European title. Both teams benefited from the absence of the defending champion Czechoslovakia .

The players of the Czechoslovak national team were almost all arrested shortly before boarding the plane to London. They were charged with espionage and treason in a show trial for allegedly planning to stay in Britain after the World Cup . There was a vote within the team as to whether or not to flee, but the majority decided against it. All players except Vladimír Zábrodský were sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight months to 15 years, which later led to suspicions that Zábrodský had betrayed his teammates.
