Winner: Soviet Union |
The 21st Ice Hockey World Championship and 32nd Ice Hockey European Championship took place from February 26 to March 7, 1954 in Stockholm , Sweden . The USSR won the title straight away when it participated in the World Cup for the first time. The victory of the Soviet team marked the beginning of a changing of the guard in global ice hockey, in which the Canadians, who had dominated until then, were gradually to lose their supremacy.
The USSR , which had been a member of the IIHF for two years , provided a team whose playful roots were traditionally in bandy . In addition, some of the Soviet ice hockey players were also successful as soccer players. Due to convincing performances in the run-up to teams like Finland and Czechoslovakia, who were definitely among the group of medal contenders, the clear victory in the decisive game against record world and Olympic champions Canada was one of the surprises of the tournament. The team suffered the only point loss the day before in the 1-1 draw against the Swedish hosts in pouring rain and during the final third in heavy snowfall.
Eight teams took part in the World Cup and, unlike last year, the strongest ice hockey nations (with the exception of the USA ) took part this year. A B-WM was not played this season.
