The 18th ice hockey world championship and 29th ice hockey European championship took place from March 9 to 17, 1951 in Paris , France . With 13 teams there was a new registration record for the post-war period. For the first time, the field of participants was therefore divided according to performance level. The seven more powerful teams played the world champions in a league round, the six less powerful teams - including host France - played a separate tournament (also in Paris) called the “Criterium Européen”. From this tournament the later B group or today's Division I should develop.
Canada once again defended its title with great ease and was the 14th ice hockey world champion ahead of Sweden , which won its third silver medal after 1928 and 1947 and was European champion for the fifth time.
