The 12th Ice Hockey World Championship and the 23rd Ice Hockey European Championship took place from February 11th to 20th, 1938 in Prague , Czechoslovakia . The competition mode was changed again compared to the previous year . 14 teams took part in this World Cup. It was initially played in three preliminary round groups, with two groups with five and one group with four teams. After originally only the first two of the group with 4 teams were supposed to reach the intermediate round, the mode was changed in the course of the preliminary round: The first three of each group reached the intermediate round. In the second round they played in three groups of three, with the three group winners and the best runners-up moving into the semi-finals. The planned implementation of a consolation round with the teams that did not take part in the intermediate round was omitted because the teams were too less interested.

The Canadians won their tenth world title. Canada was represented by the Sudbury Wolves . Great Britain won the runner-up in the world championship for the second time and at the same time the fourth European title, the third in a row. The USA played their weakest tournament so far.

Intermediate round

The nine teams qualified from the preliminary round played in three groups of three teams each. The group winners and the best runner-up qualified for the semi-finals. All three runners-up in the group were tied on points and goals. The organizing committee decided on Germany as the best runners-up in the group because it had forced the reigning world champion Canada into extra time.
