Winner: Austria |
The 12th European Ice Hockey Championship took place in Austria for the first time . The tournament was held from January 24th to 29th, 1927 . The games were played in the Austrian capital Vienna by the Vienna Ice Skating Club . The venue was the club's artificial ice rink, and the tournament committee was chaired by the Belgian Paul Loicq .
With six participating national teams, the response was not quite as great as in the previous year when nine teams took part. For this purpose, a German team was allowed to take part again for the first time after the First World War . For the first time there was a representation from Hungary . In addition to these two teams, hosts Austria , Belgium , Czechoslovakia and Poland were present, defending champion Switzerland did not appear. The tournament was played according to the league principle.
The performance of the four-time European champions Czechoslovakia was surprisingly weak . The record European champions celebrated only one victory and finished the tournament penultimate. This cleared the way for the hosts , who were able to win the title for the first time this year after the Vice European Championship last year. The Belgians celebrated a comeback, after their surprising title win in 1913 they could no longer celebrate successful appearances. This year it was enough for the sensational runner-up. Germany , returning from the European Championship, was also successful and celebrated winning the bronze medal at its first post-war tournament .
