Horst Orbanowski

Horst "Grandpa" Orbanowski (born July 7, 1908 in Düsseldorf ; † June 1, 1981 in Byram , Connecticut , United States ) was a German ice hockey , field hockey and tennis player and at times worked as an ice hockey official. He later took American citizenship and immigrated to the United States. The German Ice Sports Association awarded him honorary membership and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the German Ice Hockey Museum.

Career as an ice hockey player

Until about 1930

Horst Orbanowski played from 1925 to 1930 as a striker for Berliner SC , where he played as a striker and with whom he became German champion in 1926 .

Internationally he played for the German national ice hockey team at the European ice hockey championship in 1926 and in the team of 1927 , which reached 3rd place.

Approx. 1930 to autumn 1932

He then studied at MIT in the USA , where he also played for the local ice hockey team from 1930 to 1932.

Internationally, he was intended as a player for the German national team at the 1932 Winter Olympics .

Autumn 1932 to (sure) 1942

In autumn 1932 he returned to Germany for the Berliner SC, where he now played as a defender. In January 1933 he is said to have been considered a foreigner and should therefore not have been eligible to play in the championship finals . In 1936 he moved to Düsseldorfer EG (DEG), where he (sure) played until 1942.

Internationally he played for the German national ice hockey team at the ice hockey world championships from 1933 to 1937 , where he reached 3rd place with the team from 1934 .

1946 to 1950s

After the Second World War he only played again in 1946 for the Düsseldorfer EG. He then moved to EK in Cologne before moving back to DEG.

Other sports practiced

In addition to the sport of ice hockey, he was also active in field hockey from 1936 to 1953 with the Düsseldorfer HC and in tennis (from 1949) also with the Düsseldorfer HC.

Ice hockey function

In 1946 he took over the function of chairman of the Ice Sports Association of North Rhine-Westphalia when it was re-established.
