The BCF-Arena (formerly Patinoire de Saint-Léonard ) is an ice rink in the Swiss city of Friborg in Üechtland , Canton Friborg . It is the home ground of the HC Friborg-Gottéron ice hockey club .

history

The ice rink was built in 1983 and held 7,720 spectators at that time. The hall was sold out for the first time in its first year of existence, and since then this mark has been reached 60 times, 25 of them in the 2009/10 season alone. The ice rink has been named BCF-Arena since the 2010/11 season . The Freiburger Kantonalbank ( Banque Cantonale de Friborg ) acquired the naming rights to the hall , initially for three years .

The preliminary round matches of the 1990 Ice Hockey World Championship were partly played in the Patinoire de St. Léonard. In 2004 boxes and VIP rooms were built into the existing building , so that the audience capacity fell to 7,144, of which 2,109 were seated and 5,033 were standing. A further installation of boxes and the expansion of the seating capacity was carried out in 2009. As a result, the audience capacity fell to 7,000, including 2,200 seats. For the 2010/11 season, additional seats were installed at the expense of standing room. This initially reduced the maximum audience capacity to 6,900 seats and one season later by a further 100 seats to 6,800. During the 2015/16 season, a further 100 standing places were canceled and replaced by seats, reducing the capacity to 6,700.

In the following years, the capacity was further reduced to a total of 6,500 in favor of additional seats. The stadium has been rebuilt and expanded since 2019. As of the 2020/21 season, the stadium should have 8,500 seats, but ultimately a capacity of 9,054 including the press stand (120 seats) was achieved.
