The 1979/80 season was the 42nd regular staging of the National League A , the highest Swiss league in ice hockey . For the eighth time in the club's history, the EHC Arosa became Swiss champions, while the HC La Chaux-de-Fonds were relegated to the NLB.

In a common main round, each of the eight teams played four games against each group opponent, making the total number of games per team 28. The first place in the main round was champion. The last placed in the main round was relegated to the NLB. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
