The 1988/89 season was the 51th regular hosting of the Swiss National League A . In the final of the play-offs, SC Bern prevailed against HC Lugano and became Swiss champions . The HC Davos failed in the relegation round at relegation and got into the National League B from. The Zürcher SC achieved promotion from the NLB , while HC Ajoie achieved relegation in the relegation round.

mode

After the qualifying round, in which ten teams take part, the best eight teams play the Swiss championship in the play-offs . The teams in positions 9 and 10 of the qualifying round play the relegation round together with the best four teams in National League B.

qualification

The NLA qualification was dominated mainly by HC Lugano , which achieved 29 wins in 36 games and only left the ice as a loser four times. In contrast, HC Davos lost 25 of its 36 league games and thus missed the play-offs.

In the final for the championship title, HC Lugano first took the lead with a 6-2 victory. However, SC Bern won the next two games, so that they led the series 2: 1. Lugano won the fourth game of the playoff final 5-1, but could not keep up in the decisive fifth game and lost 2-4. This made SC Bern Swiss champions in 1989.
