Niclas Anders Hävelid (born April 12, 1973 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach and functionary who played 660 games for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , Atlanta Thrashers and New in the course of his active career between 1988 and 2013 Jersey Devils has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In addition, he completed another 570 games in his home country for AIK Solna , Malmö IF , Södertälje SK and Linköpings HC in the Swedish Elitserien . Hävelid celebrated his greatest career success in the shirt of the Swedish national team by winning gold medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 1998 World Cup . Since the end of his career in April 2013, he has been the head of the youth department at Linköpings HC and assistant coach for the junior teams at Svenska Ishockeyförbundet .
Career
In the 1991/92 season Niclas Hävelid began his career in professional ice hockey with AIK Solna . Until 1998, the defender played at AIK for a total of seven years. In the 1998/99 season he achieved the breakthrough with league rivals Malmö Redhawks with 22 points, including ten goals, which was a personal record for him. During the 1999 NHL Entry Draft , the Swede was selected as the 83rd player by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim .
In 1999, Hävelid played for the first time in a North American professional league and scored nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 50 games for Anaheim. He made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 2, 1999 in a game against the Dallas Stars . A month later, on November 19th, he scored his first goal and first assist for the Ducks against the Chicago Blackhawks . The new millennium began for Hävelid with an injury. Due to a broken finger, he missed 22 games and had to sit out from January 15 to March 8, 2000 for almost two months. In order to quickly regain game practice after his injuries, Hävelid played in two games for the Anaheim farm team , the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks .
Against the Columbus Blue Jackets , the Swede scored two goals and four assists on December 13, 2000, which meant a career record for him. Due to an injury he contracted on January 15, 2001 against the Pittsburgh Penguins , Hävelid missed another 35 games. The 2002/03 season was the most successful of his career for the defender. He was one of only five Ducks players to appear on the ice in all 82 regular season games and contributed 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) to reaching the playoffs. In the playoffs they made it to the Stanley Cup finals, but they lost to the New Jersey Devils 3: 4 in the best-of-seven series. In the seventh and final game of the series Anaheim had no chance with a 3-0 defeat.
On March 16, 2004 Hävelid came in a game against the Phoenix Coyotes to his 300th game in the National Hockey League . In the summer of the same year he was transferred to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Kurtis Foster . During the lockout , Hävelid played for Södertälje SK in his Swedish homeland and scored four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in 46 games. With Södertälje he reached the semi-finals in the domestic league. After the resumption of play in the NHL, he returned to the Thrashers. Because of his achievements in the 2005/2006 NHL season , the Swede received the Dan Snyder Memorial Award , an internally awarded award from the Thrashers, for the first time in his career .
On January 6, 2007, Hävelid achieved his 100th assist in the NHL. In the 2006/07 season , Hävelid contributed 21 points (3 goals, 18 assists) to reaching the Thrashers for the first time since the franchise was founded. Since the end of his career in April 2013, he has been the head of the youth department at Linköpings HC and assistant coach for the junior teams at Svenska Ishockeyförbundet .
International
For Sweden, Hävelid took part in the U18 Junior European Championship in 1991 , the U20 Junior World Championship in 1993 , the World Championships in 1998 and 2004 and the 2006 Winter Olympics.
