Karl Alzner (born September 24, 1988 in Burnaby , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League since July 2017 and for their farm team, the Rocket de Laval , in the American Hockey League is used. The defender previously spent nine years with the Washington Capitals .
Career
Karl Alzner began his career in 2003 with the Richmond Sockeyes in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League , before moving to the high-class junior league Western Hockey League for the Calgary Hitmen the following year . In his first season Alzner was rather inconspicuous and could hardly set accents on the offensive with only ten assists. In the following season he was able to improve, but only reached the second round with the hitmen in the playoffs, as in the previous year.
In the 2006/07 season Alzner developed into the best defender of his team and, with the role of assistant captain, also took on responsibility within the team. Due to his continuously improving performance, he was appointed to the squad of the Canadian team for the U20 World Cup , which won the gold medal in January 2007. In the playoffs of the WHL Alzner had a large share in reaching the Conference Finals with 13 points this season, but they failed there because of the Medicine Hat Tigers .
For the NHL Entry Draft 2007 Alzner was listed by the talent scouts of the National Hockey League as the second best defender of his class and was finally selected in the first round in fifth place by the Washington Capitals . In the fall of 2007 he competed with a Canadian U20 selection in the Super Series against a Russian team of the same age group. Canada won the eight-game series with seven wins and one draw and Alzner contributed one goal and three assists .
Although many saw him as mature enough to play in the NHL, he returned for a season to the Calgary Hitmen, which he now leads as team captain. In January 2008 he defended the title at the Junior World Championship with the Canadian U20 team . In the WHL, he did not score as often as in the previous season, but the Hitmen took first place in the Eastern Conference with the third best defense in the league. For his achievements he was then awarded the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player and with the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the WHL.
In May 2008 Alzner finally signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals and played at the beginning of the 2008/09 season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears , the Capitals' farm team , but was appointed to the NHL squad during the season.
At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, Alzner established himself in the NHL line-up and played 423 games of the regular season in a row in the following seasons up to January 2016. He exceeded the previous franchise record of Bobby Carpenter , who had played 422 games without a break for the Capitals from 1981 to 1986. After a total of 655 missions including the play-offs for the capital city club until the end of the 2016/17 season , the defender did not extend his expiring contract and turned his back on the team after nine seasons together. As a free agent , he signed a five-year contract with the Canadiens de Montréal on July 1, 2017 , which should bring him a total salary of approximately 23 million US dollars.
For the 2018/19 season, however, Alzner lost his regular place in the Canadiens squad and was therefore sent to the Rocket de Laval in the AHL in November 2018 .
