Jamal Thomas Boykin (born April 27, 1987 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Boykin began a professional career in which, in addition to stations in Japan and New Zealand, he played primarily in Europe . After a short-term engagement in the basketball Bundesliga in 2013/14 with the s.Oliver Baskets, he played again in the German basketball league for the then newly promoted BG Göttingen in the 2014/15 season , with his brother Ruben Boykin , who was two years older, afterwards . Jamal, however, played again in Japan for the Sendai 89ers in the 2015/16 season.

Career

Upon graduating from Fairfax High School in his hometown, Boykin was named California Gatorade Player of the Year in 2005. He then got a place at Duke University in North Carolina on the east coast, where he played for the renowned university team Blue Devils in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the NCAA . In his first year as a freshman , he was only used sporadically. After three games in the second year he was diagnosed with glandular fever , so that he had to suspend the season as "redshirted". Boykin used this break for a change of university, so that the ban following the regulations after the change coincided with his illness break. He returned to the West Coast and continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley , where he played for the college team Golden Bears in the then Pacific-10 Conference (Pac-10) of the NCAA. After a second round defeat at the National Invitation Tournament 2008, the Golden Bears were eliminated a year later in the first round of the national NCAA finals tournament against the Terrapins of the University of Maryland, College Park . Another year later, the Golden Bears won against the Cardinals of the University of Louisville in the first round, but were eliminated against the top seeded Blue Devils in the second round, so Boykin his last NCAA game against his former college team and the later Tournament winner graduated.

Boykin signed his first professional engagement in 2010 with the Turkish second division promoted from Gaziantep . The team just missed the march into the top division in 2011, which they should reach a year later. That season, Boykin played in the Republic of Cyprus for Omonia from the capital Nicosia . The team was eliminated after sixth and third from last place of the regular season in the first play-off round for the championship. After the end of the European season, Boykin played in the bj league for the Big Bulls from Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan, but they missed the play-offs. For the 2012/13 season Boykin returned to Europe and played in the Dutch FEB for the Gas Terra Flames from Groningen . After a third place in the regular season, the team lost the play-off semi-final series against eventual title winner ZZ Leiden , who remained undefeated in the play-offs. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Boykin was signed for a limited period by the s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg after injury problems with other players. Among other things, economic problems after license violations did not allow Boykins to continue to be engaged, so that his contract ended after only three appearances in the basketball league at the end of October 2013. Boykin played first in the super league of Ukraine for the Mawpy club from Cherkassy before he left the country like almost all of his compatriots after the violent escalation following the " Euromaidan ".

In the summer of 2014 Boykin played in the New Zealand league for the former runner-up Fico Finance Giants from Nelson , who narrowly missed another final against the new title winner Wellington Saints . Boykin was voted among the top five players of the season in the "All-Star Five Team". For the basketball Bundesliga 2014/15 Boykin returned to Germany, where he was signed by the first division returnees BG Göttingen, where he played again with his former college team-mate Harper Kamp . Despite a comparatively low budget, the newcomer played strongly and only missed the qualification for the play-offs for the championship on the last matchday. Boykin's operating times had decreased towards the end of the season and he switched back to the bj league in Japan for the new season, where he was active for the 89ers from Sendai . His two older brother Ruben Boykin, on the other hand, who was last active in Japan, switched to BG Göttingen in Germany instead.
