Who Killed Amanda Palmer (" Who Killed Amanda Palmer ?") Is the first solo album by the American musician Amanda Palmer , who gained international fame as the pianist and singer of The Dresden Dolls . She was musically supported by Ben Folds and Zoë Keating . The title of the album alludes to the television series Twin Peaks , the plot of which revolves around the death of Laura Palmer.

background

In 2007, Palmer released the Death Cab for Cutie cover "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" on her MySpace profile . The fact that the ID3 tags identified an album with the title "Nashville" as its origin raised hopes among fans that a solo album of the same name could be in production. Commenting on these rumors in an internet forum, Palmer said:

“That was titled" nashville "because that is the location that i am recording the solo album .... in nashville, at ben folds' studio, with ben, who is producing the record and playing on it.”

"It was called 'Nashville' because that's where I record my solo album ... In Nashville , in Ben Folds' studio, with Ben producing the recording and playing on it."

- Amanda Palmer

In April 2008, Palmer confirmed the title "Who Killed Amanda Palmer", five months later, on September 16, the album was released. In addition to Ben Folds and Zoë Keating, who provide musical accompaniment to several songs, other musicians also had guest appearances, including St. Vincent and East Bay Ray from the Dead Kennedys .

She herself says that many of the songs on the album are piano ballads that never found a place on a Dresden Dolls production because she didn't want to overload the recordings with slow pieces.

review

The feedback from the critics was mostly positive. Natasha Tripney rated Palmer's first album as “one of the most interesting albums of this year”, but emphasized on the other hand that it was not made for everyone. "The album is a dark jewel, a highly intelligent song cycle that condenses guilt, neurotic desire and low self-esteem into piano pieces, studded with lyrical stabs," says Shannon Zimmerman.
