Scott Edward Kazmir (born January 24, 1984 in Houston , Texas ) is an American starting pitcher in Major League Baseball . Kazmir plays with the Los Angeles Angels after almost six years with the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League .

High school

Kazmir finished four no-hitters in a row at Cypress Falls High School . His outstanding achievements in high school include 172 strikeouts in 75 innings .

New York Mets

Kazmir was drafted by the New York Mets in the first round in 2002 . In 2004 Kazmir was one of the Mets' most hopeful contenders to join the MLB team. At the time, Kazmir was pitching with the Binghamton Mets , the New York Club's AA team. However, Kazmir was given on July 30, 2004 in a player trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays . The trade received a lot of criticism from the New York press and Mets fans, mainly due to the later successes of the pitcher.

Tampa Bay Devil Rays / Rays

On August 23, 2004, Kazmir made his major league debut, where he pitched five innings against the Seattle Mariners .

2006 season

On July 2, 2006, Kazmir was first invited to the MLB All-Star Game . On August 22, 2006, Kazmir got eight strikeouts against the Texas Rangers , making him the pitcher with the most strikeouts in the young history of the Rays.

2008 season

On May 14, 2008, Kazmir and the Rays agreed to extend the contract for another four years. The contract guaranteed the left-hander US $ 28.5 million and could have reached a maximum volume of US $ 39.5 million.

On May 30, 2008 Kazmir broke the team record for this statistic with five wins in one month. In July of that year Kazmir was invited again to the MLB All-Star Game, in which he secured the win in the American League on July 16 . With a 4-3 win against the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series, the Rays reached the World Series for the first time, just like Scott Kazmir .

In Game 1 of the 2008 World Series on October 22, 2008 Kazmir was used as the starting pitcher. The Rays lost the game and Kazmir was taken down with the loss .

2009 season

In 2009, Kazmir was unable to match the previous year's successes (8-7 with an ERA of 5.92 compared to 12-8 and ERA 3.49 in 2008). In late August 2009, Kazmir was sold to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Among other things, the agreed future high salary was named as the reason for this, which would have made it difficult for the Rays to sign other players. Although this step had long been suspected, it ultimately came as a surprise to Kazmir himself.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

In six starts for the Angels at the end of the regular season, Kazmir set a record of 2-2 with a significantly improved ERA of 1.73. As in the previous year, the change enabled him to take part in the so-called post season , the knockout games for the championship. At his first start in the Division Series against the Boston Red Sox it remained a no-decision, in the series for the championship of the American League a defeat was scored for him in the victory of the New York Yankees .
