biography

Al Kaline, 2008

Al Kaline spent his entire career with the Detroit Tigers , for which he played a total of 22 seasons. He was promoted straight out of high school to the American League without going through the minor leagues . On June 25, 1953, he played his first game in the outfield of the Tigers. For the first time in his life he was employed there as a rightfielder. Mainly, however, he was substituted on in his first season in his 30 missions as a pinch runner . He finished the 1955 season with a batting average of 34% and won the title of best batsman. Kaline was the youngest title holder of all time in this category, Ty Cobb was exactly a day older at his first hit title. That season he also scored 200 hits and finished second in the American League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) election behind Yogi Berra . Also in 1963 he was only second in this election behind Elston Howard , also catcher of the New York Yankees like Berra.

In 1968 he was able to win the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games with the Detroit Tigers . In 1972 he took part with the Tigers in the American League Championship Series against the Oakland Athletics , which the Tigers clearly lost in five games.

At the end of his career, the last game of which he played on October 2, 1974, he had 3007 hits. His 3000th career hit was in his hometown of Baltimore, of all places . With 399 home runs , he still leads the Tigers today.

In 1980 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and his number 6 was no longer awarded as the first jersey number of the Detroit Tigers. After his sporting career, he remained loyal to the Tigers and worked as a television commentator for the team. In his honor, the former Cherry Street , which ran behind the left grandstand of the Tiger Stadium , was renamed Kaline Street . While Ty Cobb was respected and feared rather than popular, Kaline may have been the most popular player in Tiger history.

Kaline died in Bloomfield Hills , Michigan in early April 2020 at the age of 85 .
