Blind Melon is an alternative rock - band from Mississippi ( United States ). The band borrowed their name from Brad Smith's father, who referred to the local hippies as Blind Melons .
Band history
Blind Melon was founded in 1989 by Shannon Hoon (vocals), Christopher Thorn (guitar), Rogers Stevens (guitar), Brad Smith (bass) and Glen Graham (drums). In 1991 the band signed their first recording deal with Capitol Records and shortly afterwards went into the studio to record a previously unreleased demo. Axl Rose , lead singer of Guns N 'Roses and known through his sister with Shannon Hoon, then invited him to take over the background vocals on some tracks of the double album Use Your Illusion and to appear in the video for Don't Cry .
In 1992, Blind Melon's first album, Blind Melon , produced by Rick Parashar ( Temple of the Dog / Pearl Jam ) was released . The album went platinum four times and contained the band's biggest hit with the song No Rain, which was later released as a single . After various appearances in 1993 as an opening act for artists like Neil Young and Lenny Kravitz , the band went on tour for the first time as a headliner in 1994, which had to be ended after a few appearances due to Shannon Hoon's escalating drug problem. Instead, the band with producer Andy Wallace began work on their second album in November 1994, which was released in the summer of 1995 under the title Soup , a record that sounded comparatively darker than its sunny predecessor. Hoon later admitted that he had no memories of the recordings, as his drug problem escalated again at that point. The hope that the birth of his daughter Nico Blue on July 11, 1995 would lead to recovery, was not fulfilled: Despite all the warnings from Hoon's drug advisor, the band went on tour on September 19, 1995 under massive pressure from their record company to deal with the promote new material. After a disastrous concert in Houston / Texas with a completely drunk Shannon Hoon, the band reached New Orleans on the morning of October 21, 1995. The rest of the band went to their hotel rooms, while Shannon Hoon decided to make the town unsafe under the influence of drugs. A little later he climbed into the bunk of the tour bus and fell asleep. He died in his sleep of an acute cocaine overdose. The band was completely in shock when a crew member tried unsuccessfully to wake the 28-year-old for a sound check around 1 p.m.
Hoon was buried in his native Indiana in November 1995. In 1996, the remaining members of the band released the album Nico , for which previously unused vocal parts from Hoon were used. The band donated the proceeds of the album to an aid organization for drug and alcoholic musicians. After previously unsuccessfully looking for a new singer, bassist Brad Smith finally took over the vocal parts. A new album was not released, however, as the band decided shortly thereafter to go their separate ways in the future. In 1999, the end of Blind Melon was officially announced.
In 2006 the band re-formed with a new singer, Travis Warren. On April 22, 2008, For My Friends was the fourth studio album by the band.
