Frets on Fire ( English for " frets in flames ") is a free music computer game in which the user plays a virtual electric guitar . The game is the winner of the 2006 Assembly Demo Party. It is written in Python .

Game mechanics

Frets on Fire is a Guitar Hero - clone . The player tries to play the guitar parts from different songs. The notes are displayed on the screen, in sync with the song playing in the background. The notes are played by holding the "Fret buttons" (standard: F1-F5) and pressing the "Pick button" (standard: Enter) in good time. A series of correctly played notes increases the point multiplier, but a mistake resets it. At the end of a song, the player receives a rating in the form of points, zero to five stars, the percentage of correctly played notes and the length of the longest series of correctly played notes. High scores can be uploaded to the official website and compared with those of other players.

A special feature of this game is the control: the keyboard is recorded and held like a guitar: the left hand on the "fret buttons", the right hand on the "pick button".

Functionalities

  • Depending on the song, up to four different levels of difficulty (foolproof, cozy, normal and totally sick).
  • A tutorial that explains the basic functions.
  • A song editor to create new "frets" for your own songs.
  • Three standard songs (with three levels of difficulty), others can be downloaded from the website.
  • The key assignment of the "Fret Buttons" and the "Pick Button" can be changed as required. This is useful because some keyboards do not support exotic key combinations, which makes it impossible to play some chords (see system requirements).
  • Joystick support so that the Guitar Hero guitar ( PlayStation 2 ) can be used with a PS2 / USB adapter.
  • Joystick support, also for the Playstation-3 -Guitar-Hero-Guitar which can be used with the included wireless USB adapter. The PC automatically recognizes the Playstation 3 guitar controller and can therefore also be used in Frets on Fire.
  • Since the August 30, 2006 update, songs can be imported directly from Guitar Hero.
  • New sheet music for different songs is constantly being developed and published by the community.
  • Guitar Hero guitar on the Wii possible via Bluetooth and GlovePie

System requirements

Windows : 128 MB RAM , a fast OpenGL - Graphics card ( shader -Support not needed), DirectX compatible sound card .

Linux : SDL , SDL_ttf, SDL_mixer, 128 MB RAM, a fast OpenGL graphics card (shader support not required, antialiasing support recommended), SDL compatible sound card.

The standard key assignment does not work with every keyboard. While pressing a "Fret button" and the "Pick button" at the same time is no problem, the same thing no longer works with two or three "Fret buttons" and the "Pick button". This depends on the internal design of the keyboard and is independent of the type of connection (USB, PS / 2, wireless), the age and the quality of the keyboard. It usually helps to change the keyboard layout (for example to the number keys 1–5 instead of the function keys).
