Nils Russell Müller (born January 17, 1921 in Shanghai , † March 6, 2007 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian film director .

Müller was one of the most productive film directors in his country after the Second World War. Between 1946 and 1975 he made 20 feature films , one full-length documentary and around 50 other documentary and commissioned films.

Many of his works have a humorous tone, e.g. B. the film Vi gifter oss ("Wir heiraten") from 1951, which contains the hit Hva var vel livet uten deg ("What would life be without you"). But he also dealt with more serious subjects. He filmed two novels by the Norwegian writer Terje Stigen : 1972 Min Marion ("My Marion"), in which the right of disabled people to love is discussed, and in 1963 Elskere ("Lovers") with Ingerid Vardund and Wencke Myhre . The 1962 film Tonny, based on Jens Bjørneboe's novel Den onde hyrde ("Good luck, Tonnie"), discusses problematic aspects of child welfare and the prison system. For the production, which started in the competition at the Berlinale in 1962 and sparked a week-long debate in Norway, he received the silver nuggets from the Norwegian cinema operators.

In 1996 Müller (aged 75) was honored with an honorary Amanda for his life's work.
