Black Country Communion is an English - American rock band , a so-called supergroup , consisting of the ex-Deep Purple bassist and singer Glenn Hughes , the drummer Jason Bonham , the keyboardist Derek Sherinian and the guitarist and singer Joe Bonamassa .

history

Joe Bonamassa invited Glenn Hughes to a concert at the House of Blues and together they played some old pieces by Trapeze and Deep Purple . The producer Kevin Shirley, who was there, then suggested that both of them make something “solid” out of this idea and form a band . He then suggested Jason Bonham as drummer for the group. Since Bonamassa rejected a "power trio", they decided to include keyboardist Derek Sherinian .

The name of the group refers to the industrial area north and west of Birmingham (" Black Country "), in which both Hughes and Bonham have their roots. The word "Communion" ( Latin communio ) stands for "community".

The band released their debut album on August 16, 2010. By then, the members had already started writing more tracks that they wanted to use for their second album. This was published on June 10, 2011 and was simply titled 2 . In the same year the group released the DVD Live Over Europe . The footage for this release was captured at various performances, mostly at festivals. A double CD of the same name was released on February 24, 2012.

In the summer of 2012, the group recorded their third studio album, which, like all of the band's other albums, was again produced by Kevin Shirley . The album titled Afterglow was released on October 26, 2012. After completing the recordings for Afterglow , singer and bassist Glenn Hughes commented critically on Joe Bonamassa and assumed he was not interested in the band because he was hardly involved in the songwriting for Afterglow and also due to his solo activities could not be available for a tour with Black Country Communion for their third album. Hughes really wanted to go on tour, play the new songs live and felt abandoned by the guitarist. In his opinion, Bonamassa “flirted with a rock band.” He was “a rock star for a short time,” but Hughes believes that Bonamassa “feels more comfortable as a blues man”. Hughes was quoted as saying, “I'm saying politely that I want to make records with people who are willing to give one hundred percent of their time on this. If you can't do that, I'll have to look for something else. ”Based on these and similar statements, as well as hints from Hughes on Twitter , the trade press speculated that the band was about to end.

In fact, in March 2013, Bonamassa publicly stated in an interview with Premierguitar magazine that his involvement in the band Black Country Communion had ended. He is happy that he is no longer involved and satisfied with what he has left behind with the three albums that were made with his participation. Glenn Hughes then announced the dissolution of the band, as Bonamassa would prohibit the remaining band members from using the band name. This statement has so far not been publicly confirmed by Bonamassa, and Glenn Hughes reiterated in interviews that there had "never been a bad word" between him and Bonamassa. Together with Jason Bonham, the drummer of the Black Country Communion, and the hitherto unknown guitarist named Andrew Watt , Hughes founded the short-lived follow-up project called California Breed . Black Country Communion keyboardist Derek Sherinian was no longer a member of this band.

In April 2016, several band members confirmed plans to reunite in 2017, which were confirmed in June 2016 by a message that the band would start work on a new album in January 2017. The producer will once again be Kevin Shirley.

In September 2016, Glenn Hughes announced on his Facebook page that he had started work with Joe Bonamassa on a fourth Black Country Communion album. The album is titled BCCIV and was released on September 22, 2017.

However, after the album was released, the band was only able to play a few live concerts in England because Joe Bonamassa continued his successful solo career. So after a brief revival it became quiet again around the band. On September 2, 2019, Metal Hammer announced that Glenn Hughes had joined The Dead Daisies .
