Jimmy Bain (1983)

James Stewart "Jimmy" Bain (born December 19, 1947 in Newtonmore , Highlands , Scotland , † January 23, 2016 ) was a British bass player who became known through his engagement with Rainbow and Dio . He also wrote the songs on his solo albums together with Thin-Lizzy- Frontman Phil Lynott .

youth

In his youth, Jimmy Bain played in several amateur bands from the area around his hometown before he emigrated to Vancouver with his parents . He was already playing professionally in a group called Street Noise in his early twenties. When he went back to England in 1974, he joined the band Harlot in London after he had turned down an offer from The Babies shortly before .

Rainbow

Bain was invited to join Rainbow in 1975 after guitarist Ritchie Blackmore saw him at the Marquee Club . Bain was the bass player on Rainbow's Rising album , as well as on the subsequent world tour. In January 1977, Bain was kicked out of the band.

He then toured Europe with John Cale and played on Ian Hunter's album Overnight Angels .

Wild Horses and after

In the summer of 1978, Bain formed a band called Wild Horses , along with former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson , drummer Clive Edwards ( Pat Travers , Uli Jon Roth ’s Electric Sun) and guitarist Neil Carter (later with UFO and Gary Moore ). Wild Horses released two albums on EMI , The First Album (1980) and Stand Your Ground from 1981. On the latter, John Lockton (ex- The Next Band ) played instead of Carter. Robertson and Edwards left the band in June 1981. Robertson played then the next year for a short time at Motörhead , while Edwards was at Bernie Marsden's SOS.

Bain then presented a newly formed edition of the Wild Horses. The new members of the band were former Lautrec members Reuben Archer (vocals) and Laurence Archer (guitar) as well as Frank Noon from The Next Band on drums. A short time later, however, the group was disbanded. Jimmy Bain then worked with Roger Chapman , Roy Harper , Gary Moore, and Kate Bush . He wrote the songs for his two solo albums with his good friend Phil Lynott . As a keyboard player he was also on tour with Lynott and his band.

Dio

In 1983, Bain began working with former Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio on his solo project. There he worked on four albums by the band Dio , before they disintegrated in 1989 and Ronnie James Dio presented a new troupe on his next album. Previously, he had a central role in the songwriting process for Stars , the heavy rock contribution to the fight against hunger, started by Bob Geldof and Live Aid . Bain had in 1988 a solo contract with Atco Records completed and worked with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and drummer Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot at some demo recordings. These were more commercial than the songs with Dio.

In the fall of 1989, Bain formed a band called World War III , along with Mandy Lion . The band released an album in 1991 and then broke up. In the mid-1990s, when Bain got over a drug addiction, he started working on a new project. With The Key he tried his hand at a more melodic and more commercial sound. The band's guitarist was Tracy G , who was playing with Dio in the band at the time and was also a member of World War III.

Dio's concept album Magica saw Bain's return to the band. He then played on the two albums Magica and Killing the Dragon .

In the mid-1990s, Bain tried a solo album called Bain . However, the project was put on hold before completion.

In 2005 he teamed up for two projects with the former Black Sabbath and Dio drummer Vinnie Appice . The two projects were The Hollywood Alstarz and 3 Legged Dogg . The first band played concerts that performed the greatest hits of the individual members ( Carlos Cavazo of Quiet Riot was also in the band), while the second band recorded a CD of new material. In an interview with journalist David Lee Wilson, Bain expressed disappointment over Appice's decision to leave the two projects and join Heaven and Hell .

In 2013 he was with all the musicians of the Dio album The Last in Line under the name Last in Line .

death

Bain died during Def Leppard's "Hysteria on the High Seas" cruise, on which he appeared with "Last in Line". Lung cancer was named as the official cause of death. However, Bain knew nothing of his fatal illness, although some time before his death he suffered from pneumonia and had it treated. The recordings for his band's first album "Last in Line", as well as the rehearsals and performances during the ship tour, he completed until immediately before his death.
