Roy Harper (born June 12, 1941 in Rusholme , England ) is a British singer-songwriter . His son Nick Harper is also a successful musician who occasionally accompanies his father.

biography

Harper's musical roots are in skiffle music and blues . After troubled years in which he moved around Europe, he played from 1964 in the London folk club "Les Cousins". In 1966 his debut album The Sophisticated Beggar was released . The next album, Come out Fighting Genghis Smith (1968), contained the eleven-minute blues track Circle .

From 1968 Harper appeared regularly at free concerts in Hyde Park and a loyal fan base developed. In 1970 the album Flat Baroque and Berserk appeared with the piece Hell's Angels , in which Harper was accompanied by The Nice . The first US tour followed.

In the same year Led Zeppelin recorded the song Hats Off to (Roy) Harper in honor of Harper (appeared on the album Led Zeppelin III ). Harper himself was an admirer of Led Zeppelin's music. He can be seen on the cover of their album Physical Graffiti and in the 1976 film The Song Remains the Same . Jimmy Page played the guitar on Harper's 1971 album Stormcock . A similar mutual collaboration arose with Pink Floyd when Harper sang Have a Cigar on the Pink Floyd album Wish You Were Here in 1975 and David Gilmour participated in Harper's album HQ .

In 1972 Harper appeared in the film Made , for which he also wrote the music ( Lifemask , 1973). In 1975 Harper's most successful single, When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease, was released . In 1977 Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney sang on Harper's single One of Those Days in England , which made it into the top 40 . In 1980, Harper could be heard on the single Breathing by Kate Bush as a background singer.

In 1984 Harper toured the UK with Jimmy Page . They performed under different names at folk festivals, including "The MacGregors" and "Themselves," and released the album Whatever Happened to Jugula? out.

From the second half of the 1980s it became quieter for Roy Harper, but he was still active. In 2001 he celebrated his 60th birthday with a concert in London's Royal Festival Hall . In 2005 the single The Death of God , which deals critically with the Iraq war, and the film Beyond the door , which was recorded at De Barra's Folk Club and in which his son also played music, was released.

In September 2013, Harper's 22nd studio album was released with Man & Myth. In just seven songs, which are up to a quarter of an hour long, Harper only sings about the important things: In “The Exile” about life that lasts forever, and in “Time Is Temporary” about how fleeting a moment is and yet can change everything.
