Led Zeppelin III is the third album by the British rock band Led Zeppelin . It was recorded and produced in studios in Memphis , Hampshire , London and New York City from May to August 1970 and released on October 5, 1970.
Style and structure
The album begins with the Immigrant Song , a classic hard rock number in the style of previous works. This is followed by Friends , a gentle song with interwoven acoustic guitar melodies. Since I've Been Loving You is a pure, studio recorded live song. Gallows Pole , a folk song, is probably the biggest surprise on the album. Jimmy Page first heard him on a long-playing record by Fred Gerlach , a twelve-string guitarist. The song was originally heavily influenced by Leadbelly . Next up is Tangerine , a song that Page originally wrote for the Yardbirds . That's the Way contains a strongly autobiographical text and is about the impressions during their concert tours in the United States. Bron-Y-Aur Stomp is a simple song about Robert Plant's dog; the Welsh part of the title also references the Bron-Yr-Aur hut , where Page and Plant wrote some songs. The album ends with Hats off to (Roy) Harper , a tribute to the eccentric British folk singer Roy Harper .
Reviews
For the most part, the reviews were devastating. They scoffed at the band for giving up their tough style and for sounding more like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young . Nevertheless, there were a few positive reviews. After Nick Logan ( New Musical Express ), the third album would prove to be a major turning point in the band's career. Chris Welch (from Melody Maker ) said that the third album, despite the most varied approaches, was tasteful and therefore better than Led Zeppelin II .
