Gebhard Fugel (born August 14, 1863 in Oberklöcken near Oberzell , today in Ravensburg , † February 26, 1939 in Munich ) was a German painter . He specialized in Christian motifs; his best-known work is the Jerusalem panorama in Altötting .

life and work

Fugel grew up in Upper Swabia and studied at the Stuttgart Art School from 1879 (among others with Alexander von Liezen-Mayer and Claudius Schraudolph the Younger ). Already during his student days he turned to Christian motifs, which he realized in a realistic style, influenced by history painting and the Nazarenes . The painting, Christ Heals Sick , from 1884/1885 was exhibited with success in the Munich Art Association; as a result, he was represented in exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1890 Fugel moved to Munich and founded the German Society for Christian Art there with colleagues . Large-format wall paintings in churches and altarpieces now predominated in his work.

His 1140 m² circular painting on the Passion, created 1902–1903 and shown in a specially constructed building in Altötting , is one of the last surviving panoramas and its religious theme is unusual for this art form, which is otherwise determined by historical motifs. In 1905 Fugel was appointed "royal professor".

Fugel's school murals , 136 paintings on biblical subjects, also made him known to a wider public, they were also used as illustrations in school Bibles and other books.

Street names in Ravensburg , Ravensburg-Oberzell, Weingarten , Friedrichshafen , Altötting and Munich- Menzing are reminiscent of Fugel. The Gebhard Fugel Art Prize is named after him. Fugel's grave is located in the Solln forest cemetery .

Fugel was an honorary member of the Catholic student association Saxonia-Munich in the KV .
