The Roman Catholic Church of St. Ambrosius in Hergensweiler in Westallgäu is a parish church in the Lindau deanery of the diocese of Augsburg . It is registered under the number D-7-76-115-3 in the Bavarian Monument List. The patron saint of the church is St. Ambrose of Milan .

history

On October 5, 1108, the Constance Bishop Gebhard III consecrated . the first stone church in Hergensweiler. The tower substructure has been preserved from her. Today's baroque church dates from 1712. It is about twice as large as the previous building.

Construction and equipment

St. Ambrosius is a hall church with a choir closed on three sides . The square tower stands on the north side of the easternmost nave yoke.

The baroque furnishings are almost completely preserved. The high altar and pulpit are by Franz Schmuzer (1676–1741), the side altars by Abraham Baader (1694–1748), both from the Wessobrunn school .

The ceiling fresco shows Bishop Ambrose, the Emperor Theodosius I denied access to the Milan Cathedral as a penance for the massacre of Thessaloniki in 390. Gebhard Fugel created the picture in 1897. He also created the scene of the Mount of Olives on the north wall.

The church has wood-carved stations of the cross  - colored relief pictures in elaborate frames.

The organ is a work by the Hindelang brothers from 1906. It comprises 12 stops on two manuals and a pedal.
