The Roman Catholic parish church Hohenweiler is located in the municipality of Hohenweiler in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . The parish church , consecrated to St. George , belongs to the Bregenz deanery of the Feldkirch diocese . The church is a listed building .

history

The former branch of Sigmarszell, bordering to the north in today's Germany, became an independent parish in 1481 with a new church building . The Gothic parish church is surrounded by a cemetery, was expanded in 1720 and 1859 and was given a newly erected north tower in 1920. In 1973/1974 it was restored according to plans by the architect and sculptor Willi Buck.

architecture

The nave without three-dimensional structure with two side portals in the north and south and the retracted choir stand under a shared gable roof . The north tower with rectangular sound openings has a gable-pointed helmet . The tower shows the coats of arms of Vorarlberg and Brixen in the basement . To the north of the nave and choir is a single-storey sacristy extension . The west front with a pilaster structure has windows and a rose window in the top of the gable. The main portal with copper-driven doors by Willi Veith (1964) has a vestibule with a flat gable roof.

The hall space under a flat ceiling on a surrounding cornice with a cove has four flat arched windows on each side. The retracted round choir arch rests on pilasters on the wall with egg and pearl strips. The retracted choir with a three-eighth closure has a flat ceiling over a hollow valley and a cornice with a leaf crown strip and has a staircase to the left into the tower .

The frescoes from around 1480 on the choir arch and on the south wall of the nave show the washing of Christ's feet with Magdalena at the top left , flagellation in the middle, St. Nicholas, entry into Jerusalem on the right, crowning of thorns in the middle, entombment below. The frescoes on the nave ceiling were created by the painter Gebhard Fugel , the Lord's Supper in the front , Christ with children in the middle, the Adoration of the Shepherds on the back and the Twelve Apostles on the nave walls in twelve stucco medallions .

On the west facade is a priest's grave with a copper relief Good Shepherd . On the right choir wall is an epitaph for the wife of Kaspar Schoch in 1662. The war memorial with a dying warrior was created by the sculptor Alois Reich .

Furnishing

The high altar with a structure with four columns with straight entablature and a flat extension shows the high altar picture of the risen as comforter of sinners with Magdalena, Peter, thief, prodigal son, King David, tax collector by the painter Matthäus Zehender (1679), on the upper picture the Holy Trinity , and carries the side figures Konrad and Gebhard around 1720 and the top figures Agatha and Helena from the beginning of the 19th century.

Willi Buck created the folk altar, ambo , baptismal font , Easter candlestick , stations of the cross and the figures of George and Mary with child.

The organ was built by the Mayer brothers (1974). The bells were cast in 1949.
