Coda is the ninth studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin , which was released posthumously in 1982. After the death of drummer John Bonham on September 25, 1980, the band broke up. Two years later, Coda ( Coda = Italian "tail" - it denotes the appended, fading part of the piece of music, which often bears character traits summarizing the entire work).

introduction

Led Zeppelin bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones commented on the album in an interview with Richie Yorke in the book Led Zeppelin: Biography of a Band :

“Little could be done then. We didn't have too many tracks left - the ones we had were definitely good enough for an album. I think they were good numbers - some of them came about when punk was in full bloom. They just didn't match In Through the Out Door that well . We almost always had songs left over after album sessions, but most of them were later used elsewhere. We always had more tracks than we needed for each album, and usually they were good numbers, otherwise they wouldn't even be recorded. "

Jimmy Page , guitarist and producer of Led Zeppelin, began work at Coda after the soundtrack to Michael Winners film Death Wish II (Death Wish II) with Charles Bronson had finished. There were two reasons for releasing the album:

  1. Fan interest in the bootlegs with unpublished material from Led Zeppelin.
  2. When Swan Song Records , the band's record label, was founded in 1974, a contract was made to release five Led Zeppelin albums. And with Coda that contract was fulfilled.

The album was produced at Sol Studios in Cookham, Berkshire, England, which then belonged to Jimmy Page.

The songs

We're gonna groove

The song is not only the album's opener, but was also the opening number on UK, European and US tours from January to April 1970. According to the information on the cover, the song was played during the Led Zeppelin II sessions at Morgan Studios in London recorded. It was later confirmed that the song was from the Royal Albert Hall concert in London, where the guitar parts were re-recorded and the original guitar part removed.

Poor Tom

Poor Tom comes from the Led Zeppelin III sessions and was recorded at Olympic Studios in London in June 1970 . This song was never played live.

I can't quit you baby

According to information on the album cover, the song was recorded during the sound check for the concert at London's Royal Albert Hall on January 9, 1970. But also here it was confirmed that the song like We're Gonna Groove comes from the concert itself. The piece was played live from 1968 until the 5th US tour. Afterwards it was used as part of the Whole Lotta Love Medley on the Japan, UK and European tours from 1972 to 1973.

Walter's Walk

Recorded in May 1972 at the Houses of the Holy session at Stargrove Studio in Berkshire. The song was never played live in this form. Only the basic structure was used on the 1972 US tour during Dazed And Confused .

Ozone Baby, Darlene and Wearing and Tearing

These three songs were recorded during the November 1978 sessions for In Through the Out Door . All three songs were never played live by Led Zeppelin. Wearing And Tearing was first played in 1990 by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page at the Silver Clef Awards in Knebworth Park, England. Then the song was played by Robert Plant on his USA live tour in 1990. He also reappeared on Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's world tour in America in 1995, which also featured Ozone Baby.

Bonzo's Montreux

Bonzo's Montreux was recorded in September 1976 at the Mountain Studio in Montreux. A drum solo by John Bonham was mixed with electronic effects by Jimmy Page .

Cover

The cover was made by Hipgnosis , a company that, in addition to Led Zeppelin, designed covers for Pink Floyd, Wishbone Ash, AC / DC, among others. The front side shows the album title CODA in large green letters on a gray background and below it the band name Led Zeppelin , which is underlined in red, also in green . On the back the titles are listed and on the bottom a photo of ten artificial fields in the desert, which are supposed to symbolize the ten Led Zeppelin albums. On the inside of the pop-up cover there are photos of the band from the beginning of their career up to 1979.
