Stars was recorded on May 20 and 21, 1985 with the participation of forty musicians who belonged to popular hard rock and heavy metal bands in the year of its creation . The basic instrumentation corresponds to that of a then modern rock band; the instruments were played by members of the band Dio . These were:

The title begins with the line Who cries for the Children? Sung slowly by Ronnie James Dio . I do.

Only then do the instruments kick in and the song reveals its character as a riff- oriented hard rock song. The title initially follows the scheme of verse - bridge - refrain , but after the second verse there are a total of six solos, each 12 bars long, played by different guitarists . The song ends after 7:16 minutes after another bridge and a fading chorus that contains another short solo played by Neal Schon . In detail, the solos played after the second chorus were taken over by the following guitarists:

  1. Solo: Vivian Campbell (Dio), Brad Gillis ( Night Ranger )
  2. Solo: Brad Gillis, Craig Goldy, Donald Roeser ( Blue Öyster Cult )
  3. Solo: Craig Goldy ( Giuffria ), Eddie Ojeda ( Twisted Sister )
  4. Solo: George Lynch, Carlos Cavazo ( Quiet Riot )
  5. Solo: Yngwie Malmsteen , Vivian Campbell
  6. Solo: Neal Schon ( Journey ), George Lynch ( Dokken )

The melody lines of the choruses were recorded by the two guitarists Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (both from Iron Maiden ). The vocals were taken over by many different singers, the verses were shared by Ronnie James Dio, Dave Meniketti ( Y&T ), Rob Halford ( Judas Priest ), Kevin DuBrow (Quiet Riot), Eric Bloom (Blue Öyster Cult), Paul Shortino ( Rough Cutt ), Geoff Tate ( Queensrÿche ) and Don Dokken (Dokken).

The chorus of the song was sung in the choir, the choral singing was shared:

reception

Stars did not make it into the charts in the USA , but in Great Britain it reached number 26, in the Netherlands number 12, and in Norway even number 1. Stars was the only song - otherwise only albums were selected - that Rock Hard magazine featured in the Listed his 500 best phonograms on 332nd place out of 500. Jenny Rönnebeck called it a “fantastic catchy tune”. She wrote: "The fascinating thing about stars is that the track seems to be made from one piece and yet gets a very personal stamp from every musician, even if only for a few seconds."
